After what seemed like a lifetime, something began to move within her shadow. Eve made a grabbing motion and pulled up as hard as she could. Before her stood a house cat? She blinked. She had expected some sort of bird, maybe, or something bigger. One had moved from her spot on Eve's bed, where she had been sulking again and examined the shadow familiar. If cats could make a face of disproval, that was what One did.
"What do you think, One?" The cat turned away from the familiar. "Aw, don't be like that. He's just a house catlike you!" One turned around and looked at Eve before the cat shook her head at her, looking somewhat offended.
"He's not? Well, what is he?" Eve could have sworn One rolled her eyes as she moved to Eve's bookshelf to find the book of shadow familiars. She pulled the book off the shelf with her teeth and pawed at the pages until she came to a page that was missing. The cat meowed in protest and flipped back to the table of contents before pointing
